About the event
Reflections & Refractions is an event series celebrating diverse forms of storytelling and artistic expression that engage with the heritage of Hong Kong.
For this inaugural edition, with film as our chosen medium, we launch the series with a charity screening in support of the vital work of the Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library — preserving archives and heritage, nurturing academic exchange, and promoting cultural dialogue.
We love film because film tells stories — of the past, the present, and the future. It reflects the contemporary voice and refracts our shared experiences through diverse perspectives. The films we have selected speak to who we are and to the stories we wish to share with the world.
Film Lineup & Synopses
FOUR TRAILS 香港四徑大步走 (Begins at 2:30 PM)
Genre: Documentary
Language: English & Cantonese
About the Film: At the time, they said it couldn't be done. In 2012, Andre Blumberg set off by himself, to run all four of Hong Kong's iconic ultra distance trails in just four days. 298km and over 14,500m of climbing later, one of the hardest ultra-marathons in the world - the Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra Challenge (HK4TUC) - was born.
With the 2021 edition of the challenge as a backdrop, 'Four Trails' takes you on a journey from when the concept was first conceived to its current format. Under 60 hours to be deemed a 'Finisher' and under 72 hours to be a 'Survivor', unsupported and with an ever-evolving set of rules. It takes a deep dive into the famous four trails that make up the challenge and you will both laugh and cry as the astonishing stories of those who ddare attempt such a feat unfold.
THE LAST STITCH 雙縫 (Begins at 5:30 PM)
Genre: Documentary
Language: Cantonese, Mandarin & English (with English & Traditional Chinese subtitles)
About the Film: A deeply personal exploration of the Chinese diaspora through the lens of a fading craft. Director Alfred Sung turns the camera on his own parents, Tommy and Connie, master Cheongsam (Qipao) tailors. Tracing their journey from Shanghai to Hong Kong's Repulse Bay, and eventually to the Toronto area, the film weaves historical footage and home videos collected over 26 years. It poses a poignant question: as the older generation retires, will the art of traditional Chinese tailoring survive, or are we witnessing the last stitch of a cultural legacy?
GOLDEN BOY 金童 (Begins at 7:30 PM)
Genre: Action / Drama
Language: Cantonese (with English & Traditional Chinese subtitles)
About the Film: A decade ago, Cheung Lek was the brightest rising boxing star—known as "Golden Boy"—until a tragic incident stripped him of his freedom. Ten years later, released from prison, he comes face to face with Fong Yuen, the son he has never met. To claim the inheritance left by Fong Yuen's mother, Cheung must learn to live with and take care of the boy. Thrust into fatherhood and confronted by past regrets, Cheung's life is turned upside down once more. Through conflict and gradual reconciliation with his son, he begins to understand his true purpose. Confronting the ghosts of his past, Cheung decides to return to the ring—not only to reclaim his dream, but to become the role model his son deserves.
